At Nowtilus, we are committed to minimizing our environmental footprint and taking responsibility for the impact generated by our business activities. After an impressive EU Green Week with many impulses, and Cannes Lions around the corner, we are excited to announce a new partnership aimed at contributing to a greener future.
In addition to our Emission Reduction Plan in which we project to decrease Nowtilus and Serveside.ai emissions by half by 2030, aligning with the United Nations Race to Zero effort, we decided to join Project Boddin in the plantation of trees to compensate for our air travel.
We understood that it is not sufficient to decrease our business flights to a bare minimum by preferring online meetings or favoring trains over air transportation when the distance allows it (e.g. for European trade shows like IBC 2023 and buying frequent traveler railway cards for our key employees). Therefore, we have carefully selected a tree-planting project located in Europe to counterbalance our travel emissions. By planting trees at this site in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (a spacious rural region in the northeast of Germany), we aim to restore and enhance the local ecosystem while absorbing the carbon dioxide emitted by our flights.
CO2 Compensation Project Boddin led by Eng. Thilo Krastel aligns with our values and objectives as we strive to address climate change and promote sustainable practices.
The demand for voluntary CO2 offsetting has risen sharply, especially in recent years. There are many ways to offset and reforestation still accounts for the largest share. However, in the majority of cases, it is hardly possible for the financier companies to verify whether the specified projects fulfill the promised goals.
In addition, the planting of trees does not make sense everywhere in the world. Many of the measures do not even unfold their climate effects because the trees die after a short time due to unfavorable site conditions or missing water supply. However, the sponsors of the measure usually do not find out about it.
On the contrary, we chose a rural location that is well known to offer a good growing environment for large trees.
Besides, the Project Boddin area has a total size of 2 ha so it is quite small compared to the ones usually deployed for similar initiatives, and the site is located in Germany, the same country where Nowtilus is headquartered, this way we can easily check and report progress ourselves.
In this regard, our Co-Founder and Managing Director Patrick Knippel already visited the area at the beginning of March and had a few words with the Project Leader Thilo Krastel, an experienced agricultural engineer. You can watch an excerpt of their conversation in the video interview below:
To summarize, these are the key features and the benefits we expect from our tree-planting initiative:
Carbon Sequestration: Trees are nature's champions when it comes to absorbing carbon dioxide. Through photosynthesis, they convert CO2 into oxygen, helping to mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere.
Ecosystem Restoration: By planting trees, we contribute to the restoration of the German forest ecosystem, enhancing local flora and fauna, thus making a positive impact on the environment.
Sustainable Partnership: We have partnered with reputable environmental professionals with expertise in reforestation and ecosystem conservation. Project Boddin's team will ensure the successful implementation and maintenance of the tree-planting project, maximizing its ecological benefits.
Transparent Reporting: Nowtilus is committed to transparency and accountability. Therefore, we will regularly report on the progress of our tree-planting initiative.
Through our decision to offset air travel emissions by planting trees in Europe, we aim to reduce our carbon footprint and make a positive contribution to the environment. We recognize that offsetting alone is not a complete solution but it is an important step toward a more sustainable future. As a responsible company, Nowtilus is continuously evaluating and implementing additional measures to reduce its emissions and promote sustainable practices in all aspects of its operations.
We once more invite our partners, customers, and all the players in the MediaTech sector to join us on this journey toward a greener future. Only by working together, we can make a difference and, hopefully, inspire others to take similar actions for the betterment of our planet.
Stay tuned for new environmental initiatives and let’s discuss together how to make our industry a more sustainable one at Cannes Lions 2023! Meet with us!
